Nel grew up in Northern Maine ("the County"). There he learned the value of a hard day's work as he picked potatoes during any spare time he had between school and basketball. Nel moved to Southern Maine in 1975 to pursue a degree in accounting from Husson College.
Nel is a member of the National Association of Tax Professionals (NATP) as well as the National Association of Enrolled Agents (NAEA). Enrolled agents are federally licensed tax professionals who also have unlimited rights to represent taxpayers before the IRS.
